How aguinaldo is calculated
Aguinaldo is a mandatory year-end payment separate from monthly salary. Its calculation depends on the worker’s daily salary and years of service. Unlike monthly payroll, it has no ISSS or AFP deductions; only income tax withholding applies when the amount reaches the threshold.
- Less than 1 year: proportional to time worked, based on 15 days.
- From 1 year to less than 3: 15 days’ salary.
- From 3 years to less than 10: 19 days’ salary.
- 10 years or more: 21 days’ salary.
Daily salary is ordinary monthly salary divided by 30. Gross aguinaldo is that daily salary multiplied by the days due under the table above (Código de Trabajo, art. 198). The first $1,500 is exempt from income tax; only the excess is subject to the same withholding table used by this site’s other calculators. There is no special aguinaldo rate, but there is an important difference from monthly salary: aguinaldo never has ISSS or AFP deductions, because it is not ordinary salary subject to those contributions, only taxable income for income tax purposes.
Salvadoran law sets 12 December as the annual payment deadline for aguinaldo. An employer paying later, or using a salary different from the worker’s actual earnings, risks an employment claim whose cost rarely compares favourably with calculating it correctly the first time. This calculator helps workers check their entitlement and employers budget December expenses in advance. The result is an estimate: each company’s actual obligation depends on its complete payroll, which is best handled by someone who does this regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Are ISSS and AFP deducted from aguinaldo?
No. Only income tax may be withheld, and only on the amount exceeding $1,500 (aguinaldo is exempt up to that amount). Monthly salary, by contrast, is subject to both contributions. Compare it with the take-home pay calculator.
What if I worked for less than a year?
You receive a proportional share of the 15 days based on actual time worked during the calendar year, rather than the full aguinaldo.
What is the payment deadline?
12 December each year, according to the Código de Trabajo. Paying after that date exposes the employer to a claim before the Ministerio de Trabajo.
