How the vacation bonus is calculated

Every worker with one continuous year of service is entitled to 15 days of paid vacation plus a 30% bonus on ordinary pay for those days. This is a separate benefit rather than an advance on normal salary.

1. Daily salary: monthly salary divided by 30.
2. Ordinary amount: daily salary multiplied by vacation days (15 by law).
3. Vacation bonus: an additional 30% of that ordinary amount (Código de Trabajo, art. 177).
4. Total to receive: the ordinary amount plus the bonus.

The law requires payment before the worker starts the vacation, unlike monthly salary, which is paid after the period worked. An employer paying vacation with the next payroll instead of before the break fails to meet that requirement even when the amount is correct.
